If you have won a TopCoder contest, do not... DO NOT depend on that money being paid quickly. And do not make any financial promises until you know for sure, when you will get paid. From the TopCoder FAQ, "How to Get Paid": "payments earned between November 1 and November 30 will be sent out on or before December 15." http://www.topcoder.com/t.....e=algo_get_paid http://www.topcoder.com/t.....e=algo_get_paid I read these FAQs thoroughly. I sent in my paperwork (Twice as I forgot to sign a form) and made sure I covered my obligations to submit my source files, promptly, for the contests I had won. The contests in question being the Equitrader Wireframe (3rd place) and the TopCoder 07' Web Design (1st place) Both contests were completed in January and both of them (According to the FAQs) should have been paid the 15th of this month. As of today, I've received the prize money for the Equitrader contest (Thank you TopCoder!) but the payment for the Design contest has been scheduled for March 15th. In talking with Myliza Sheehan (Who has been very patient and accommodating) over at TopCoder, she told me that she hadn't received the paperwork concerning the results of the TopCoder Web Design contest until after January; this delay meant that I couldn't be scheduled for payment until March 15th. She was unable to give me reason why the paperwork was delayed. The contest was completed January 26th, so the process of payment would have, should have begun January 29th. Three days before the end of the month. This would have been fine had I not been reckless. I had made a promise to make a payment - unrelated to TopCoder - believing that I would have the money in time to pay it off. Some good can come of this... I believe the FAQs should be updated, a disclaimer could be added stating that some contest winners - especially those contests completed near the end of the month - may not be issued payment the following month, but the month after. And, I believe that TopCoder is obligated to inform contest winners, to email a clear and accurate estimate of when a payment will be issued, so that contest winners can make clear and accurate preparations. Had I received an email stating that I would not be paid for the Web Design contest until March 15th, I would have been a little miffed, but I would have accepted it, and I wouldn't have made any financial promises I couldn't keep. The last word, a plea really... If TopCoder could see fit to bend the rules just a little, and make payment for the Design contest as soon as possible, It would save me a lot money and I would be eternally grateful. Yours in recklessness, et.. etc... |
