As an added prize, the top point-getter of each month in 2008 (July - December) will win a trip to the 2009 TCO finals to be recognized. At the TCO awards presentation, the overall highest point-getter for the entire year will be recognized as the winner of the TopCoder? Studio Cup.

this is awesome addition! thank you! better chance to meet other great studio members at TCO :-)

Hi oton,

To answer your questions, the percentage and placement numbers are coming from this table here (the old DR table):
http://www.topcoder.com/t.....;d3=desOverview

The new table (posted on July 1) will show 1-5 placements, not 1-7 placements.

I hope this helps!

Quite clear explanation, Jess. Thank you.

Only a bit need to be clarified:
- Where does the percentage number coming from?
- Is it fixed number for 1-5 placement?
- Or, is it related to the number of submissions on each contest has?

Thank you.
Re: Introducing The Studio Cup! $5000 Prize Pool Each Month (response to post by oton ) | Reply
oton,

I am happy to give an example.

Let's say a logo contest is launched in July and that contest adds 200 points to the Studio Cup. This means it also adds $200 to the prize pool (1 point = $1).

We know that logo contests always get a large number of submissions, so let's assume this contest received 50 submissions that passed screening and were sent to the client.

The Client then chooses the winner and ranks four more submissions (for a total ranking of 1-5). Here's how the points for that contest would be distributed:

1st place winner gets 56% of the points (112 points)
2nd place gets 20% of the points (40 points)
3rd place gets 10% of the points (20 points)
4th place gets 8% of the points (16 points)
5th place gets 6% of the points (12 points)

Now the leaderboard would be updated with those members who ranked 1-5 and the points they had received. Remember - these points have nothing to do with the actual contest prize money that is awarded for the contest itself. Studio Cup points and the prize pool are in addition to the prize money the contest pays out.

After all contests launched in July have ended, the Studio Cup leaderboard for July is finalized. If there were not enough contests held in July to add 5000 points to the Studio Cup, we will still guarentee a $5,000 Prize Pool to be distributed among the point earners.

The entire prize pool is split equally into two pools -- the "Top Five" and the "Top Half". The top five point earners will receive prize money from the "Top Five" prize pool, while the remaining point earners in the top half of the leaderboard will receive money from the "Top Half" prize pool. (There will be more information about this when we post the rules and supporting documentation in July).

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Jess,

Could you please give us some illustrations on how the point is rewarded to each contest, may be you can give three or so result sample. Sorry, I still don't get the rules yet :) Pardon me.

Check out all the details here: http://studio.topcoder.co.....8v2&d3=home

We are very excited to announce the Studio Cup starting in July! As you may have seen on the TopCoder forums yesterday, TopCoder is making significant changes to Digital Run beginning July 1st. The Digital Run track for Studio, called "Studio Cup" offers up a prize pool every single month. This means more Studio members will have the opportunity to win money, and the top designers will have the chance to win very big indeed! Studio is the fastest growing platform in the TopCoder family, and we know you're excited to participate and benefit from more contests, more clients and more prizes.

Studio has a guaranteed prize pool of $5,000 paid out to the Studio Cup leaders each month. This pool will grow throughout the month with each contest launched and completed - so the more contests run, the more money will be paid out in the Studio Cup.

Unlike previous TopCoder Digital Run stages, the Studio Cup's pool (and all TopCoder DR tracks going forward) are funded with a percentage of revenue that is generated from the contests that you participate in. With the Studio Cup actually tied to Studio?s revenue, the more the company grows, the more you can earn in the Studio Cup.

Here's a more specific look at how TopCoder Digital Run (including Studio Cup) will work:

When: Starting July 1

1. 3 Digital Run Tracks
Instead of the current Design, Development and Assembly Cups there will be 3 overall tracks that combine various contests:

  • Software Design - Includes contests posted in Software Design and Application Architecture

  • Software Development - Includes contests posted in Software Development, Application Assembly and Application Testing

  • Studio - Includes all contests posted in Studio

2. Monthly Stages and more frequent payouts
Instead of the current quarterly stages, the new DR will run as 1 month stages. So, the DR will reset at the beginning of each month.

3. Revenue-based Prize Pools

  1. Each track has its own Prize Pool

  2. The amount of money in each Prize Pool will grow with every contest launched and successfully completed

    1. Each track has a guaranteed minimum monthly pool.

      1. Software Design - $10,000

      2. Software Development - $10,000

      3. Studio - $5,000

TopCoder will ensure that the Prize Pool at the end of the month is no less than these amounts. (Based on projections, if this system had been in place for the first half of the year, the prize pool would have been approximately $40,000 for Design, $55,000 for Development and $10,000 for Studio )

    2. Every contest that is launched within the month will have DR points associated to it. Each point will contribute $1 to the corresponding track's Prize Pool. For example, if a Studio contest launches in July with 500 DR Points, then we will add $500 to the Studio Cup Prize Pool. The more contests we run and complete, the more money we add to the pool. As TopCoder and Studio continue to grow, we want the community to be able to directly impact and benefit from that growth. In essence, it's like driving the price of your own stock higher.

4. How to Earn Points
You earn points the same way you've already been earning prizes - by competing. Every contest will have DR points associated to it. The top 5 people to place in any given contest will be awarded a percentage of the DR points for that contest. If there is only 1 submission that passes then that 1 member receives 100% of the points for that contest. If there is more than 1 accepted submission then the DR points will be distributed between the submitters on a sliding scale (up to the top 5).

How to win the DR
In order to win the DR, you must finish the month with the most points. Each track will have a separate set of winners, so you can potentially win all 3 DR tracks. Prizes will be given to the Top 5 point earners in each track. The top half of points finishers will also win a portion of the Prize Pool.

This is something new for all of us so we'll likely be making adjustments as we go along. We appreciate your patience and involvement in TopCoder and Studio, and we look forward to hearing your feedback. Keep your eye out for the complete new rules and information next week. Good luck in the Digital Run!
